Gilly’s Jazz is a premier spot for jazz and blues in downtown Dayton! Owner Jerry Gillotti purchased the old Green Derby Night Club located at 810 N. Main Street in June of 1972, and operated six nights a week, with the band performing three sets each night. Gilly’s moved to its present location at 131 S. Jefferson, at the corner of Fifth and Jefferson, in 1977. Many legendary jazz, blues, R&B, rock, country, and acoustic folk artists grace Gilly’s stage. These include local pianist Roy Meriwether, Bill Evans and his Grammy winning trio, Young/Holt Unlimited, Ahmad Jamal, Monty Alexander, Gene Harris & the 3 Sounds, Jeremy Steig, Les McCann, Gary Bartz, and McCoy Tyner. For the Big Bands, Stan Kenton, Count Basie, Maynard Ferguson, Lionel Hampton, Buddy Rich, and the Gil Evans Orchestra have performed at Gilly’s. Many known jazz artists have visited Dayton to perform at Gilly’s, including Herbie Hancock, David Sanborn, Tony Williams, Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Teddy Wilson, Roland Kirk, Cecil Taylor, Art Blakey, George Benson, Kim Waters, Jimmy Smith, Groove Holmes, Arthur Prysock, James Moody, Charles  Mingus, Ernestine Anderson, and Chuck Mangione. Gilly’s has presented world renowned blues artists, including B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, KOKO Taylor, Mel Waiters, Z.Z. HILL, Buddy Ace, Tyrone Davis, Bobby Blie Bland, Denise LaSalle, Debbie Davis, Stevie Ray Vaughn, The Thunderbirds, Willie Dixson, Little Milton, Mose Allison, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, Leon Russell, Lonnie Mack, Magic Slim, Johnny Taylor, and Buddy Guy. This Dayton Original continues to bring top talent to the area, from headliners to the next breakthrough act!
