Ed Smith Flowers and Gifts is a family owned and operated florist that has happily served the Dayton Metro Area since 1955! They specialize in fresh cut flowers, house plants, fruit and gourmet baskets, balloon bouquets, dish gardens, European baskets, traditional style funeral arrangements, mixed floral standing sprays, vase arrangements, elegant roses, fresh and silk arrangements, and much more. Ed Smith was in his 40s when he owned Miami Valley Distributing Company, which sold appliances. After many visits, he became close business friends with the owner, Rolf Zetlitz. In 1954, Miami Valley Distribution caught fire and burned beyond the replacement value. Ed Smith wasn’t sure he would be happy working for someone else, since he had his own business. Nevertheless, Ed would still frequent the florist on West Riverview Avenue and talk to his friend Rolf. Ed didn’t know anything about flowers (he couldn’t tell a rose from a carnation), but he knew business. The friends often joked about Ed buying the business from Rolf, and one day the discussion grew serious and the deal was done. Ed Smith Flowers and Gifts was born, and by the mid-60s the business had grown to three stores, the main store on West Riverview, Salem Avenue by the Salem Mall, and Woodman Drive by the Air Force Museum. Today, the main store on West Riverview remains open. In the late-60s, Ed began sending plants to schools for science projects and initiated a project whereby the Brownies, Bluebirds, and Girl Scouts passed out 2,000 assorted color roses to people downtown. In the late-70s, Ed retired and passed the torch on to his two sons. On February 4, 1981, Ed Smith passed away; however, this Dayton Original has stayed in business and continues with his name and philosophies to this day!
