Kick-N-Flava is a 7-member group that puts their personal, refreshing ”flava” to a contemporary jazz and R&B sound. All Dayton natives, the group members are: Mike Allamby on sax; Big Gil Frazier on trombone and lead vocals; Jerry Hawes on keyboards, lead and background vocals; Claude Coatie on lead guitar; J.D. Williams on bass guitar; Brian Smiley on drums and background vocals; and Dave Matthews on percussion, lead and background vocals. Mike Allamby first picked up the saxophone at the age of 10, and at the age of 13, he became active with many of Dayton’s Funk and R&B groups of the 70s and 80s. Big Gil, a self-taught trombone player, has performed with Midnight Starr, Millie Jackson, The Ohio Players, Slave, and Lakeside. Jerry Hawes started performing at the age of 13, playing with The Young Mods in the 70s. At the age of 17, Claude Coatie started playing guitar, and played with several groups along the way, including Chazz during the 80s. Although he started playing drums at the age of 12, J.D. Williams switched to bass guitar by the age of 14. In the 70s, he played with several local bands and throughout the city with the Dayton Co-Op Groups. Brian Smiley started playing drums at the age of 14, and during his college years, toured with the group Phase IV, opening for Isaac Hayes, the O-Jays, and the Last Poets. Author/Poet/Musician David Matthews plays 19 different Latin percussion and African instruments. He has toured with Gil Scott-Heron, War, and the late great Grover Washington, Jr. Author of three books of poetry, David is the poetic discovery of world-acclaimed Nikki Giovanni. With jazz, R&B, and even some blues, Kick-N-Flava is an entertainment experience you won’t want to miss. This Dayton Original is one of the Miami Valley’s “must see” bands!
