The Unit, founded by Lamonte Hall, Jr., and Terry Perdue, offers free boot camp style workout classes to the community. Classes are held on Mondays and Wednesdays, 6:00-7:30 p.m., and Saturdays, 9:00-10:30 a.m., at RiverScape MetroPark. Each class starts with a warm-up, then they break out into three different groups (beginner, intermediate, and advanced). Each class finishes with a cool down consisting of abs and stretching. The workouts are enhanced by the amenities at the RiverScape Metro Park. The Unit utilizes the weather, fountains, steps, hills, and bike trails for comprehensive workouts. On any given day, up to 100 people may be seen participating the boot camp workout! The Unit moves indoors in mid-October, weather depending. Winter classes are held at Rivers Edge Montessori School, 108 Linwood Street.
The Unit takes great pride in their focus on community service and relationship building. In return for the free workout classes, participants are asked to serve their communities. To accomplish this, community service initiatives are planned once a month. The benefitting organizations have included the Humane Society, Habitat for Humanity, The Victory Project, Central State’s K4L Youth Program, the American Red Cross, City of Dayton’s Human Relations Council, CIRGV, Ft. McKinley Church, Catholic Social Services, and many others. The Unit’s motto is “Improving Self, Improving Community”; their overarching quote is by Ghandi, “Be the change you wish to see.” This Dayton Original is making a difference!
