Photographer and artist, Dan Cleary, took his first photography class at the Living Arts Center in Dayton as a high school student. His interest sparked and he went on to attend Wright State University where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photography in 1980. He then attended graduate school at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Detroit, Michigan, receiving a Masters of Fine Arts in 1982. Dan married his wife, Maria, a fellow Cranbrook graduate, and started his professional career as a staff photographer at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. As a 25-year old, Dan thought he had it great going out on assignment every day taking photographs at Wright-Patt. Dan then became a wedding photography assistant at Wallace-Martin portrait studio in Dayton. He was eventually offered a job as assistant to Ed Martin, the studio owner and became their head wedding photographer. Dan spent the next five years as Ed Martin’s apprentice where he learned to be a professional photographer. In 1989, Ed Martin retired, and Dan opened Cleary Creative Photography. Dan has owned and operated Cleary Creative Photography for 25 years working with many individuals, families, businesses, and corporations in the Miami Valley. Dan has taught classes at the University of Dayton and at the Ohio Institute of Photography. Dan has also continued to focus on his personal art and has been included in many art shows in the Dayton area. This Dayton Original has a passion for creating fine arts photography.
